The popularity of the series also resulted in a host of merchandise
items including Corgi cars, an Emma Peel doll, a John Steed swordstick,
jigsaw puzzles, Avengers stationery and toy guns. In addition there
was a series of books, annuals and comics, together with several record
releases of the theme music from the series, the original music composed
by Johnny Dankworth and later by Laurie Johnson. Patrick Macnee and
Honor Blackman also recorded a novelty single titled ‘Kinky Boots.’
In 1963 there was talk of an ‘Avengers’ feature film which would team
Steed and Gale with a male and female American agent but, before it
could proceed, Honor Blackman left the series to star with Sean Connery
in the James Bond film ‘Goldfinger.’ When Diana Rigg left the series
she also featured in a Bond movie, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’
with George Lazenby.
Talk of an 'Avengers' movie was mooted in the Sixties, Eighties and
Nineties, with Mel Gibson at one point suggested for the part of Steed.
Eventually, an ‘Avengers’ film was produced in 1990 with Ralph Fiennes
as Steed, Uma Thurman as Emma Peel and Sean Connery as the villain of
the piece.
