Live at The Vic'
- Sixties Jamming!
Were you part of the North East Clubland Rhythm Group scene in the
Sixties? Do you remember The Downbeats, The Zephyrs, The Panthers, The
Gringos or any of the thousands of other groups who populated the working
men’s club scene in the area around this time? then read on - this concerns
you!
We are bringing together many semi-pro local musicians and singers who
worked the North East Working Men's Club circuit during the Sixties to
meet and swap stories, songs and pictures. Tudhoe Victory Club, on the
outskirts of Spennymoor, Co.Durham, have kindly donated the use of their
excellent Concert Room on the second Thursday in every month.
The evenings are intended to be very informal - providing an opportunity
not only for the working artistes of our era to perform as we did back
then but also for performers of all ages to strut their stuff to a live
backing and in front of a live audience. Free amplification and PA equipment
will be provided!

There
are three former Beatles performing this year: Paul McCartney, Ringo
Starr and Pete Best. Pete, of course, creator of the Beatles ‘atom
beat’ which made such an impact on their return to Liverpool from
Hamburg, was the Beatles drummer for two years from August 1960, the
actual month when they adopted the name 'The Beatles', until August
1962, the period which John Lennon referred to as the best years of
the Beatles. |
Pete
will make his only 2010 appearance at the Casbah club on Saturday 28th August.
Many people deservedly call the Casbah ‘the birthplace of The Beatles’,
because the cellar club was the catalyst for John, Paul and George to re-unite
and enjoy their first-ever club residency. It remains the only club indelibly
stamped with Beatles history to remain exactly as it was when John, Paul
and George performed there in 1959.
This incredible 'Bestfest', which has now become an annual event following
the sell-out debut in August 2009, not only presents an actual former Beatle
in performance, but a range of other unique acts from Beatles history. Chas
Newby will also make a special guest appearance at this historic venue.
Chas performed as bass guitarist with the Beatles on their return from Germany
in December 1960 when their original bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe, remained
in Hamburg. He debuted with the Beatles on 17th December 1960 on their first-ever
Liverpool appearance following their Hamburg trip, when they displayed their
incredible tour de force performance following their baptism of fire in
Hamburg – and the Beatles were truly born. Also on the bill of this year’s
concerts is Earl Preston & the TT’s. This is an appropriate choice because
Earl was once known as Gene Day and, on that historic evening when the Beatles
made their Casbah appearance, Gene Day & the Django Beats were also featured.
|
Two other classic outfits from the heyday
of the Mersey Sound are among the other artists on the bill – the
legendary Undertakers and the Delrenas.
There will be a matinee concert from 12 noon until 6pm and an evening
session from 7pm until midnight. Tickets for either event are £20.00
and are available at petebest.com or merseycats.com (click

There
will be a 1960's weekend at the Llangollen Railway this summer, on
31st July & 1st August. This is the first time they've tried to host
an event with this theme. They are wanting to recreate as many sights
and sounds of the era as they can - as well as |
running
trains on the railway that are representative of the period - a mixture
of steam, diesel and railcars - and encourage visitors to dress up. There
will be a small music concert at Llangollen, a real ale bar, a vintage 'rail
replacement' bus service and an intensive timetable of atmospheric trains
working throughout the day and evening.
They would welcome any owners of 1960s vintage cars, bikes, vans, buses,
lorries, folk who like to dress up in 60s gear and any trade stands that
sell 60s memorabilia or clothes. They have arranged a field for folk to
display 1960s vehicles at one of the stations along their line. Llangollen
station does not have its own car park, but they have some limited spaces
on which they would like to display some prime examples of 60s classic cars
to add to the atmosphere.
They are pleased to be able to offer two complimentary return tickets for
use on their trains for every classic car owner who displays a 60s vehicle
and one ticket for everyone who displays a motorbike (pre-registration required).
Trade stand pitches are also available at favourable rates to those with
60s items to sell. Click on the logo for more details.

Here's a Dutch site that organises some great Sixties gigs in
the Eindhoven region of south east Holland, so if you're around
the area, take a look to see what's happening! Not only are Hennie,
Leo and Cees 'survivors' of the Sixties who are keeping Sixties
music alive, they are also supporting a great cause - KIKA
- a Dutch charity helping children with cancer. They currently
organise about 10 shows a year in their region.
