The
Beginning

The Fifties

The Sixties

The Eurovision Song contest began at the Teatro Kursaal, Lugano, Switzerland, on Thursday 24th May 1956, the realisation of a concept by Frenchman Marcel Baison, and has since produced many British chart hits and career boosts both for the British entries and continental winners. There were only seven entrants in the first competition, each presenting two songs, all but two countries using two different performers. The U.K. was surprisingly not represented in that contest, but has competed each year since.
