Created
by Monty Berman and Dennis Spooner for ITC,
30 one-hour colour episodes of this British action series starred Stuart
Damon, Alexandra Bastedo, William Gaunt and Anthony Nicholls
and was originally transmitted
from September 1968. While on a mission to China, three agents of Nemesis: Craig Sterling, Sharron Macready and Richard Barrett, are forced to crash-land in Tibet. Their dying bodies are found by members of an ancient civilisation who revive the agents and endow them with extraordinary physical and mental powers, enhancing their speed, strength and senses of sight, hearing and smell. The opening narration condenses the tale: “Craig Sterling, Sharron Macready and Richard Barrett – the Champions. Endowed with the qualities and skills of super humans – qualities and skills, both physical and mental, to the peak of human performance. Gifts given to them by the unknown race of people from a lost city of Tibet. Gifts that are a secret to be closely guarded – a secret that enables them to use their powers to their best advantage – as the champions of law, order and justice - operators of the International Agency of Nemesis!” The trio continue to work for Nemesis, an organisation funded by the nations of the world and founded to combat situations that could affect world peace. An ex M.I.6. operative Commander Lawrence Tremayne heads the agency and originally recruited Sterling, a former member of the C.I.A., Sharron Macready, an M.I.6. agent and Barrett, who had served in various United National security departments. |
Their new
super powers are enhanced by the fact that they also have a highly developed
extra-sensory perception and are in telepathic communication with each other.
They are unaware of the full extent of their new physical and mental powers
and are continually discovering additional abilities. The three agents undertake various assignments which take them from tropical Caribbean islands to frozen Antarctic wastes dealing with threats ranging from nuclear blackmail to the assassination of Presidents. The main players are Stuart Damon as Sterling, Alexandra Bastedo as Sharron, William Gaunt as Barrett and Anthony Nicholls as Tremayne. Guest players included Jeremy Brett, Bernard Lee, Adrienne Corri, Gerald Harper, Peter Wyngarde and Donald Sutherland. The various directors of show episodes included Sam Wanamaker, John Gilling, Freddie Francis, Robert Asher, Don Sharp and Roy Ward Baker.
