Somewhere in New York . . .

The outline of the original television series, one of the most successful during the Sixties and initially called 'Solo', was drafted by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. It was intended to be a spoof on Bond, which was itself a spoof on the world of international espionage. Fleming, who invented the names Napoleon Solo and April Dancer, was unable to finish the work, ( accounts vary as to whether it was due to illness or whether Bond producer Cubby Broccoli objected ), and it was taken over by the series producers Norman Felton and Sam Rolfe, Fenton being responsible for the introduction of the Kuryakin character.

J.Edgar Hoover, the FBI director at the height of the cold war, apparently loathed the series as one of the main characters was a Russian and also because the department was inundated with letters from people of all ages enquiring as to how they could join the UNCLE organisation. A person also had to be hired specially at the United Nations headquarters in New York just to reply to these kind of letters.

The name U.N.C.L.E., like its evil, global domination-obsessed adversary, THRUSH, did not originally stand for anything in particular but fan interest was so intense and persistent that the acronyms 'United Network Command for Law and Enforcement' and 'Technical Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity' were subsequently created.

Based in a secret H.Q. in New York, top U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo ( Robert Vaughn ) and Illya Kuryakin ( David McCallum ) gained entry to the complex through a camouflaged entrance in the rear of Del Floria's cleaning outlet, the scene featured in the opening sequence of all the TV episodes. The Head of the organisation was Alexander Waverly, played by Leo G. Carroll. There was even a Moneypenny-like receptionist handing out security badges whom Solo used to flirt shamelessly with.

The series had a notably British flavour, both David McCallum and Leo Carroll being of that extraction. Leo was a successful West End stage actor before moving to Hollywood in 1934 and appeared in six Alfred Hitchcock films. He died, aged 80, in 1972.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. television series, an American production screened by BBC1 which ran from 22nd September 1964 until 1968, consisted of episodes titled ' The . . . . . Affair', such as 'The Dippy Blonde Affair' and 'The Bow Wow Affair', each episode being subdivided into several 'acts'.
Among the famous 'guest artists' to appear in the show were Vincent Price, Vera Miles, Sonny and Cher, Joan Collins, William Shatner, Kurt Russell, Joan Crawford, Jack Palance and Janet Leigh.

A 29 episode spin-off series entitled 'The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.' was screened from 13th September 1966 featuring the delectable Stefanie Powers as agent April Dancer with Noel Harrison playing her sidekick / partner Mark Slate. This followed much the same format as the original series, Leo G.Carroll continuing in the role of Alexander Waverly.

Another connection with the James Bond productions was the featuring of high-tech futuristic weapons and gadgetry which included a car with gull-wing doors, the U.N.C.L.E. guns ( which were Walther P38s with many special attachments such as silencers and long range sights ), the sophisticated security badges and, of course, the fountain pen communicator with its extending aerial and distinctive transmission sound. Eight feature films were made and were highly successful despite the fact that all of them were
